A Realmgate Too Far

 After a good degree of quiet on this blog, let’s see if I can add something more consistent!  While it may not come through on previous posts (and by the name of the blog), I do a lot of historical wargaming (painting, etc) as well as Warhammer/Fantasy/Sci-fi stuff. This is a somewhat eclectic mix of periods, but a lot of it is horse and musket, Napoleonic, and 19th century era conflicts. What can I say, I’m a sucker for a musket and a good set of gaiters. The Monmouth Rebellion is one of the more recent ones I’ve been working on (over the last year or so). The rebellion itself occurred in 1685 (alongside the Argyll Uprising). Many folk will be familiar with at least the name and some broad sweeps of the history.  And… yet another long gap there. I haven’t been very active online (here or social media) for a while - mainly work related excuses, changing job, trying to sort out moving house, etc etc. Anyway… I have been painting away in between these spread out posts though, and getting the odd game in here and there. A mix of Games Workshop stuff (mainly 40K and AoS) and historical (War of the Triple Alliance, some Romans and Gauls, some Wars of the Roses models, a few other things), so I should have plenty of stuff around to photograph and add here. Let’s see if I actually do that. On the “most recent things” front: The new edition of 40K came out a couple of weeks ago (seems not long since the last one? Though I might be wrong and its the usual GW cycle…) and we managed to snag a copy of Leviathan. I first started got into GW games properly back in 1994/5 with 2nd Ed 40K (well, Heroquest and Space Crusade before that, but I wasn’t really aware of the link until my brother brought home a copy of White Dwarf I think). Probably because of this, my hazy nostalgia point is bright orange/red marines, spikes plants, and green bases, and it’s always formed an impression as to what I think a lot of the models and games should look like. One of the things I’d had in the back of my mind to do at some point was a 2nd Ed army, or as near as. While I’ve still got some of my old models, I ended up adding to them over the last few years, but only really painted a couple of models until recently. For whatever reason, I found the inspiration to actually get on with doing it since Christmas this year, to the stage that I’ve now completed a couple of tactical squads and a few characters - fair but to go, but a decent start at least!  Recently I’ve been playing a few different game systems, partly as a new local gaming club (run by a number of people I’ve known for a while) has just started up again over the last month or so ( https://diceandbolter.wordpress.com/ ), and it’s nice to try out some new systems every now and again! At the minute, I’ve got quite a few partly painted WH40K and AoS projects, but the issue I always tend to find is concentrating on something long enough, without getting distracted too much - while you can do smaller size 40K, for instance, it does still tend to be a bit more of a commitment to get something together (I’ve painted a grand total of two new Orks, for instance, and have a half done Space Marine army that I need to get back to, etc. etc.). Historical wise, I’ve got a few projects on the go as well - but tends to be a case of painting a couple of battalions up and then wanting a break for a bit - not necessarily an issue, as these are generally slow burn projects.  …that I can’t be bothered putting into different posts. So you get a load of stuff here. Still, pretty pictures, eh? Necron leaders, doing a variety of silly poses! Necron Destroyers. Flailing madly! This is all the painted Necrons I have. There are a few unpainted ones, and I may get a couple of extra things, but this is a sizeable enough force for most games, with a few options (such as C’tan or Monolith). Orcs across space and time, united to smash things. Or poke them. Nice models - I’d like to do more of both, but we will see what happens - likely I’ll be distracted. Ah, something historical. The Belgian 5th Light Dragoons. Supposedly much maligned (although opinions differ), the one time they have been on the wargaming table, they clearly had something to prove, and ended up routing 2 units of Chasseurs and a unit of Lancers!  Ah - apparently I painted some AoS things over the last few months! Yes, that would examine why they are sat on the shelf. In the few months proceeding the latest version of AoS (hopefully I’ll play more games of this one than the last version - it does look fun!), GW released a number of Broken Realms supplements, and the last one featured a big old centaur chap… Kragnos! Smasher of things! Kragnos! Basher of kings! And yes, the big lug had to be painted as a Lynel, of course. How else would you paint him? Part of the thinking here was to paint up Kragnos and then do some of the new Kroolboyz (or whatever the new orcs are actually called!) to wander along with him. I’ve since picked up the Dominion set, and have made the models, but have only pained a single Gutrippa. They’re all sprayed green and ready to go though, so I might try to get cracking at some soon.  Yes…  Well, having looked back, maybe it wasn’t 6 “moths” since my last post, but certainly more than 6 months. Oops. So, what have I been up to since the last post? Not much gaming, but a reasonable amount of painting. Let’s see if I remember to post about it going forwards. In any case, today we have a few pictures from some of the more recent models I’ve painted from the Perry Miniatures War of the Triple Alliance range. This isn’t something I’d come across before the Perry’s announced the range - and as ever, I fell for the shiny new things. There’s also a few reference books that have been purchased as well, and I’ve managed to get through at least a few of them so far!
