2nd Edition(ish) Nostalgia
I first started got into GW games properly back in 1994/5 with 2nd Ed 40K (well, Heroquest and Space Crusade before that, but I wasn’t really aware of the link until my brother brought home a copy of White Dwarf I think). Probably because of this, my hazy nostalgia point is bright orange/red marines, spikes plants, and green bases, and it’s always formed an impression as to what I think a lot of the models and games should look like.
One of the things I’d had in the back of my mind to do at some point was a 2nd Ed army, or as near as. While I’ve still got some of my old models, I ended up adding to them over the last few years, but only really painted a couple of models until recently. For whatever reason, I found the inspiration to actually get on with doing it since Christmas this year, to the stage that I’ve now completed a couple of tactical squads and a few characters - fair but to go, but a decent start at least!
Beautiful. As someone who's been away from the hobby for years (since 2nd ed, actually), how practical is it to field a 2nd edition army in current-gen 40K?
ReplyDeleteAh, going for a long time delay getting back to you here - as I’ve been away from blogging for quite some time! Honestly, I’ve mainly used the Blood Angels to play 2nd ed recently. I think you could get away with some armies (like marines) in more current editions, especially if friendly games, but I can’t say they would be optimum for tournament play, as it’s not something I’ve really done.
ReplyDeleteThat said, you can definitely make a valid army in 10th edition with (some?) 2nd ed armies - there is more freedom as to what you take again now (he says, only having had 2 games in 10th), no real restrictions on having to take a number of battle line/core/whatever it is called units, and just max restrictions on repeats. There might be the odd issue with weapon load outs, as GW seem to be much more on a “what is in the box is what you can take” approach. Probably depends on how flexible your gaming group is.
