Recently I’ve been playing a few different game systems, partly as a new local gaming club (run by a number of people I’ve known for a while) has just started up again over the last month or so (https://diceandbolter.wordpress.com/), and it’s nice to try out some new systems every now and again!
At the minute, I’ve got quite a few partly painted WH40K and AoS projects, but the issue I always tend to find is concentrating on something long enough, without getting distracted too much - while you can do smaller size 40K, for instance, it does still tend to be a bit more of a commitment to get something together (I’ve painted a grand total of two new Orks, for instance, and have a half done Space Marine army that I need to get back to, etc. etc.). Historical wise, I’ve got a few projects on the go as well - but tends to be a case of painting a couple of battalions up and then wanting a break for a bit - not necessarily an issue, as these are generally slow burn projects.
The latest distraction is Frostgrave - which I’ve not really got into until recently. A number of people I know used to play this regularly, but it’s not something I’d looked into much, until I had a chat at the new club the other week while a game was in progress. Queue me looking round the internet afterwards, and then ordering a few bits and pieces. Maybe more than a few!
Over the last week or so, I’ve finished up my current gang - and Kati & I have had a couple of games (hence the slightly different composition of the gang from the starting crew).

The Great Barrington, and his lovely assistant, Jetta. |
 |
Crossbowman, Thug, Treasure Hunter, Apothecary |
 |
Archer, Thief, Infantryman, and Thief 2 |
The Great Barrington, wizard extraordinaire, is, as you may have guessed, a summoner. The main reason I went summoner was that I liked both this model and the demons in the Frostgrave book (all North Star miniatures). While Barrington is now level 5, he hasn’t had the best time of it - in his first game he managed to get scragged by a imp that wandered onto the board behind him (possibly an apt experience for a summoner), with the result that he now starts every game with -1 health, and he very nearly got shot to death in the second one. On the other hand, he has managed to do a bit of summoning himself (as has Jetta), so it’s not all bad!
One of the slight drawbacks of Frostgrave is that you do really need to have quite a menagerie of extra figures, either for specific scenarios or for random encounters - though this does depend on how extensive your figure collection is, and you can always make substitutes. On the other hand, it does make for a nice variation in painting things!

Three demons. Are these a Pokemon evolution group? |
 |
Three constructs - again, maybe an evolution series here. |
 |
Probably not Pokemon - slightly more “natural” creatures: a white gorilla, a bear, a snow leopard and a couple of ice toads. |
 |
Armoured skeletons, troll, magmite and nullman.
Again, these are all North Star models from the official Frostgrave range - mainly because I like them! While I suspect there will be a few more North Star models as I build through a selection of wandering monsters, by all means it won’t be the only manufacturer I use - I’ve got some old (5th edition) citadel Grave Guard than may get pressed into service as extra armoured skeletons for example, as the styling isn’t too dissimilar (and it’d be nice to have them used - they are lovely old models).
Once Kati has finished her war and, I expect there will be a few pictures that go up of them, and some game shots - but watch this space for more beasties incoming.
