Initial plans

So, what's the actual plan with this blog then?

A little about me first, I guess: I've been into wargaming since I was a young 'un, originally with Heroquest & Space Crusade, before getting into Warhammer 40,000 in '94. Since then, I've played & painted many GW systems, as well as a variety of other games, including various historical, fantasy & sci-fi games. This blog may end up containing things from a variety of systems, but initially it will probably be Warhammer: Age of Sigmar (AoS), or possibly the odd Warhammer 40,000 (40k) thing.

Lets see how that goes.

I have tried blogging before - there were a couple of attempts with a different google account, which didn't get very far (horse & musket stuff and oldhammer models I think... though it was a while ago). There's also a second blog, tied to this account, which I set up to support the A Gathering of Might tournaments that I used to help support. Mainly pictures from the events, or painting updates for raffle armies. I'm sure you can find it with a few clicks here and there, if interested.

None of these lasted very long - for various reasons. Hopefully I'll actually do a bit better this time.

So...enough rambling (that can be picked up at other times - as people who know me in real life know, I do tend to ramble on about various things...many of which that are probably not important or relevant).

The intention of this blog: initially the idea is to provide an outlet for some of these ramblings, and to spur me on a bit, painting and gaming wise. The current plan is to try to play through at least some (I doubt we'll get through all, but we'll see) of the Realmgate Wars series of campaign books for AoS. For those not in the know, this was a series of books covering (initially) the attempts by Sigmar to reclaim the Mortal Realms from the forces of Chaos. The first couple are pretty much Stormcast Eternals versus Chaos (of various Gods), but it does branch out into other factions later.

Here's one - The Realmgate Wars: The Quest for Ghal Maraz.

By now, you'll either have got fed up, and left, or for some reason you're still reading. At this point, I have to admit I'm hardly the first to look at doing something like this. There's a great blog here that runs through the Realmgate Wars: https://ttgamingdiary.wordpress.com/. Mine won't be anywhere near as good - the level of commitment is mindblowing.

Feel free to go and read through. It might take you a while! I'll (not) wait.

My humble offerings are unlikely to have battle reports in anywhere near as much detail, nor are any battles we play likely to be completely painted...I will try, after a while, but the initial few posts will be somewhat lacking in paint on some models. This is partly due to the fact that a good chunk of my old Stormcast Eternals collection was "sold off" as a raffle army (so..raffled, rather than sold, but the same effect). Coupled with my inability to pass up new shiny things, this has caused some problems.

However I've recently (well, basically since we were told to stay inside, with the current pandemic, so a few weeks?) started to remedy that. I've dug about in boxes and found most of the Stormcast models that I have. There are more on sprues, and I imagine there will be another box with something else in it somewhere, but I think I've found most of them.

Grand total painted models when I did this? About 3, and another 5 or 6 partly done. Not a great start... after a pit of perseverance, though, we've reached the stage where there are a number of "normal" Stormcasts painted. The Warrior Chamber types, primarily. For those of you that know what they are, we're talking about things like Liberators, Retributors and Judicators, rather than Vanguard or Sacrosanct Chamber types. This is for two reasons: (i) these make most sense in the setting, and are what is seen most in the background at this point (though we should acknowledge that if more models had been available at the start, others might have appeared sooner in the "fiction", but we'll leave that for now); and (ii) for whatever reason, when the Vanguard (and Sacrosanct) Chambers came out, I decided to paint them in a different colour.

So, where does this leave us. Well, the below is an idea of what I'm trying to get painted:

Stormcast Eternals muster for WAR!

As you can see - not all done. But a fair bit along from 3 models finished (the pedants among you will notice that only three models are based still, and one of those has lost the top of his weapon). But I feel it is fairly achievable in the next couple of weeks - most of the base colours are there, and once the blue armour is finished, the details are fairly quick to do.

So that's the Stormcast Eternals. What about their opponents (and allies)?

Well, we're a bit luckier there - the first army I actually painted for AoS was the Khorne Bloodbound, so there's quite a lot of them painted up. I've just finished polishing off a bunch of Putrid Blightkings, Nurgle Chaos Spawn, and a few characters. I'd also picked up a few Slaves to Darkness models when the new book was released (around Christmas?), so with the addition of the odd Tzeentch model, we're getting somewhere - even thought these are the least painted (they come in a bit later though so we might be ok if we start small). Oh, and that Dreadhold tower needs doing (oh joy...).

I'm also lucky that my partner (and opponent for these games) is a wargamer as well, with a passion for ratties, so there's quite a lot of painted Skaven. She also has a Sylvaneth army - so that's the first allies the Stormcast need taken care of as well.

I'll try to get some decent (ish) photos up in the next few days of some of the finished Stormcasts, and maybe some of the "Baddies" as well. We might get onto a game in the next week or so, but we'll see (we have a game planned, more on that another time, but whether it is this weekend we play is another matter - we'll see).

So from here - hopefully watch this space!
